Dr. Everett Parker Turns 90!

Foundation students and board members helped Dr. Everett Parker belatedly celebrate his 90th birthday. During Student Congress 2003, Dr Parker was presented with a cake and an award that read:

ON THE OCCASION OF HIS 90TH BIRTHDAY,
THE EMMA L. BOWEN FOUNDATION
WISHES TO RECOGNIZE AND APPLAUD
EVERETT C. PARKER
FOR A
LIFETIME OF PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEDICATION
TO
DIVERSITY IN THE MEDIA

Dr. Parker is co-founder of the Emma Bowen Foundation and has been its Treasurer since the Foundation was established in 1989. Dr. Parker was the former director of the United Church of Christ’s Office of Communications for 30 years. He is well known for his tenacity in fighting for the rights of minorities. In 1964, the UCC’s Office of Communications, lead by Dr. Parker, challenged the license renewal of WLBT, a key TV station in the mid-South for discrimination against African Americans; the case was ultimately won in the Court of Appeals. During his tenure at OC, Inc., Dr. Parker successfully petitioned the FCC to issue EEO Rules, fought off challenges against the Fairness Doctrine, advised communities on securing public access in their franchise negotiations with cable operators, defended the Equal Time Rule for political candidates, and created a consumer coalition to deal with a restructured telephone industry after the break of the Bell companies. Dr. Parker also produced radio and television documentaries on religious and ethical issues. Dr. Parker continues his legacy at Fordham University where he teaches courses in communications policy and ethics as well as helping to influence media ownership policy through the Minorities in Media Telecommunications Council. WORKPLACE HOLLYWOOD PROVIDES $50,000 FOR SIX REGIONAL WORKSHOPS IN 2002.

WH Logo Through a very generous grant of $50,000 from Workplace Hollywood, the Emma L. Bowen Foundation was able to conduct six regional workshops in New York; Washington, DC; Atlanta; Chicago; Dallas; and Los Angeles during the summer of 2002. Each Foundation student was invited to attend one of the workshops. The central theme of this year’s workshops was “resume development and interviewing skills.” Several of the workshops included mock interviews with video playback. In addition, each workshop had a keynote speaker who addressed both industry issues and career advice. When possible, Foundation graduates currently working in the media industry were included on the panels. The workshops also provided an opportunity for Foundation staff to review the new Student Manual and encourage networking among participants in the program. Details about the workshops are included below in the Summer 2002 Report.
