diversity that they would so readily provide us with a new home. We also want to recognize NBC for its continuing generosity in providing our beautiful office space in Washington, DC and ABC for providing for our space in New York and LA since the Foundation was created in 1989. |

The Emma L. Bowen Foundation received a $25,000 grant for a second year from the Procter and Gamble Fund to use for Foundation programs and administration. Procter & Gamble Productions has been a corporate sponsor of the Foundation since 1997. P&G Productions proudly boasts two Emma Bowen Foundation graduates who are currently working in the industry: Hayya Lee with Lifetime Television and Samantha Yearwood with NBC. Lauren Kelly, a sophomore at Wesleyan University and Vitra Singh, a junior at NYU are the currently working at P&G Productions.

| Through a very generous grant of $50,000 from
Workplace
Hollywood, the Emma L. Bowen Foundation was able to conduct
six regional workshops in New York; Washington, DC; Atlanta;
Chicago; Dallas; and Los Angeles during the summer of 2002.
Each Foundation student was invited to attend one of the workshops.
The central theme of this year’s workshops was “resume
development and interviewing skills.” Several of the workshops
included mock interviews with video playback. In addition, each
workshop had a keynote speaker who addressed both industry issues
and career advice. When possible, Foundation graduates currently
working in the media industry were included on the panels. The
workshops also provided an opportunity for Foundation staff
to review the new Student Manual and encourage networking among
participants in the program. Details about the workshops are
included below in the Summer 2002 Report. The mission of Workplace Hollywood is to ensure that historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged communities can effectively compete for and gain access to jobs and business opportunities within the entertainment industry. David Geffen, Jeffery Katzenberg, Steven Spielberg, Entertainment Industry Foundation, Ford Foundation and the James Irvine Foundation fund Workplace Hollywood. Matching funds are provided by the State of California. |

The Foundation’s promotional materials needed a facelift and ABC Radio kindly offered to do the “makeover”! With the graphic design expertise of Design Line, the Foundation created a new information kit that will be used to promote the Foundation with potential corporate partners, educators and organizations and agencies that promote workplace diversity. Our special thanks to Darryl Green of ABC Radio for his support! |

Steve Raddock, VP of Public Relations for the Cable Television Advertising Bureau, recently presented a check for more than $1500 to support the activities of the Emma Bowen Foundation. The funds were donated by CAB members at a Silent Auction during the 2002 Local Cable Sales and Management Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. We welcome the opportunity to work with the members of the CAB and, in particular, thank Steve Raddock for his enthusiastic support. In addition to the Emma Bowen Foundation, the auction proceeds were also donated to Cable Positive, conference scholarships, and the CAB Scholarship Trust Fund.
To supplement students’ academic studies and direct work
experience, the Foundation conducts an annual Student Congress in
Washington, DC and regional summer workshops. During the summer
of 2002, six workshops were conducted. As a result of the Workplace
Hollywood grant and the CTPAA donation, every student in the Foundation’s
program attended one of the regional workshops and we were able
to include college sophomores for the first time (along with college
juniors and seniors) at our Student Congress.
The annual Student Congress is designed as a “capstone”
event to allow students to demonstrate both their professionalism
and knowledge of the industry, meet and interact with media executives,
and begin developing a peer network for the future. The theme of
Student Congress 2002 was “How Our Industry Serves Its Community.”
Twelve industry executives, including the heads of two major network
television groups, met with our students to discuss local news,
community relations, sales and marketing and careers in the industry.
Students also met and talked with FCC Commissioner Kathleen Abernathy,
after participating in an FCC overview presentation by Donna Gregg,
a seasoned communications attorney and adjunct professor at Duke
Law School. Grace Killelea, CEO of Sterling Resource Group, an executive
coaching firm, provided a half-day seminar on “personal branding,”
geared specifically for up-and-coming professionals.
One of the highlights of Student Congress each year is the annual
Board of Directors and Student Luncheon where students spend time,
one-on-one, with the Foundation’s Board of Directors. Our
“Student of the Year Award” presentation is also conducted
during the luncheon.

Henry Greenidge, a student at ABC, who attended both a workshop
and Student Congress said, “Thank you for giving us a place
where we can learn, interact and network with people in the industry.”
Rochelle Oliver, a student at Paxson who attended the Atlanta workshop,
said, “The Foundation has provided an internship experience
that will undoubtedly change my life forever.” Lauren Kelly
at P&G Productions said, “I learned more about myself
and my goals through the workshop.” Trey Tims at Turner Entertainment
attended the Atlanta workshop and said, “Thanks so much for
organizing the workshop—it is not often that I am truly inspired,
but the Foundation really jumpstarted my drive!” Christine
Portela, a student at NBC, said, “It was great to be able
to share my experiences with other Foundation students and find
out that we had so much in common.”
The funds provided by Workplace Hollywood covered expenses for student
travel and accommodations, catering and supplies, staff travel and
accommodations, printing and postage for all six workshops, as well
as expenses for California-based students attending the Student
Congress 2002. The Cable Television Public Affairs Association provided
additional funding for Congress 2002.

We are also pleased to report that a career guide, “Your Step-by-Step Guide to Getting the Job You Want,” is being developed to incorporate the materials provided at the workshops and Student Congress. This guide will provide Foundation students with a comprehensive workbook covering job search strategies, resume development, cover letters, interview preparation, job offers, and the benefits of mentors and professional organizations. The guide will be distributed to all students in the program and include a timeline for how to maximize opportunities from Day One in the program. We expect the guide to be completed in the spring of 2003.

Sandra Rice and the Foundation’s New York office, with the generous help of the TVB, organized Parents’ Night in NY for the parents of Foundation students in the New York area who have recently joined the work/study program. Parents had an opportunity to learn first-hand about the program from Phylis Eagle-Oldson and Sandra Rice, meet students’ supervisors, talk with Foundation graduates, Alturo Rhymes and Carlos Austin, and view both the Foundation’s promotional video and a United Church of Christ video on equality in the broadcast industry featuring Foundation graduate, Rokeia Smith.

Niena Drake was presented with the “Student of the Year Award for 2002 at the Foundation’s Board of Directors/Student Luncheon in Washington, D.C., on June 19, 2002. Niena was nominated by WFLD-FOX 32 in Chicago where she participated in the Foundation’s work/study program since 1997. Niena graduated with honors from Columbia College of Chicago with a degree in Communications. She is currently a weekend field producer and special projects coordinator for WFLD. She is pictured here with FCC Commissioner Kathleen Abernathy.

John Eggerton, B&C’s Deputy Editor, Washington, DC, was on hand to present the subscription certificate to Niena Drake, the Foundation’s 2002 Student of the Year.
Harry Jessell, Broadcasting & Cable Magazine’s editor in chief, generously provided one-year subscriptions to the Foundation 2002 Student of the Year nominees to help launch their media careers. In addition to 2002 Student of the Year Niena Drake, the following college seniors were nominated by their corporate sponsors: Michael Jimenez, a graduate of Iona College, who worked at WCBS during his work/study program and is currently a sports producer at WCBS; Kerwin Speight, a graduate of American University, who worked at C-SPAN during his work/study program and is currently an associate producer at WCNC in Charlotte, NC; Willona Olison, an honors graduate of Augustana College, who is currently attending Northwestern University on a full scholarship for her combined Masters/PhD in Communications; Tasha Martinez, an honors graduate from USC, who worked at KSEE-TV in Fresno, CA; and Janice Jose, a honors graduate from USC, who worked at KABC in Los Angeles and continues to work there on a free-lance basis.

Most successful executives acknowledge the contribution of
mentors in their career advancement. In an effort to provide
Foundation students the opportunity to learn from industry
executives, the Foundation developed a mentoring program with
the help of Reid Dugger Consulting Group. The Walter
Kaitz Foundation agreed to fund the program’s development
and first year of implementation. The 2003 summer mentoring
program will consist of four mentoring sessions in a group
environment with a focus on interpersonal skills in the corporate
environment. A mentor training session is also included. |

The theme for this year's Congress was Leadership and Diversity: A 21st Century Model. During the Congress, participants met with FCC Chairman Michael Powell to learn his views on leadership, discussed their experiences in media companies with District of Columbia Mayor Anthony Williams, and learned more about the inner workings of our nation's capital from City Council Chairman Linda Cropp. Attendees also had the opportunity to join industry leaders serving on the Foundation's Board of Directors for lunch and a post-lunch workshop on leadership styles and experiences.
During the three-day Congress, students and graduates participated in three working sessions on leadership, diversity, and personal financial management. Professor Jim Oldson of Loyola University/Chicago conducted the leadership session, Ethan Loney of NBC conducted the diversity session and John Naporkowski of Dime Bank conducted the financial management workshop. The Foundation is currently recruiting for eleven additional positions with ABC, Insight Communications, Adelphia, Paxson Communications, FOX, NBC and the UCC.

Norma Provencio Pichardo was named the new head of the Foundation's west coast office in January 2001. Prior to coming to the Foundation, Norma served as Vice President of Development and Vice President of Administration, Finance and Information Systems with the Fulfillment Fund for ten years. The Fulfillment Fund provides mentoring to minority students and encourages them to continue their education. Norma has been active in the Century City Chamber of Commerce and a variety of community service organizations. She is married and has one son. Norma brings a wealth of experience in a variety of areas and will play a significant role in the growth and development of the Foundation and its students..

Students in the Los Angeles area attended a summer workshop on the CBS Studio City lot on August 8, 2001. Students had the opportunity to meet and talk with Marilyn Beaubien, an independent producer, Daisy Lin Shapiro, a producer for "Beating the Odds", and Dackeyia Simmons, CEO of KeyQuest Publishing. Each of the speakers enlightened students about the variety of paths media professionals must pursue to achieve their goals. Students also met with two Foundation graduates to learn more about "life after graduation." Jada Miranda was a Foundation student at ABC and is currently Manager of Comedy Programming at ABC. Marquetta Moore also completed her Foundation work/study program at ABC and is now in ABC's Association Program for management training.
Following lunch and a tour of the Studio City lot, students also participated in a session on personal financial management.
