This year's opening night kicked off with a reception for our nearly 200 fellows and members of our Board, providing the opportunity for fellows and Board members to learn more about each other. Our Student Awards Ceremony followed the reception and recognized our Emma Award winners and Student of the Year. The night ended with our inaugural "Emma Talks" in which five students shared on topics ranging from traveling abroad to the criminal justice system.
The EBF Summer Conference exposes fellows to the many facets of media and technology. Fellows heard from panelists in a variety of fields.
Journalists included Fox News Channel anchor Arthel Neville, CBS News producer and alumnus Rodney Hawkins, and American Mosaic Journalism Prize winner Jaeah Lee discussed their journalism careers and the representation of persons of color in the media.
Sessions also focused on the business and technology tracks. Business topics emphasized public relations, media sales, and marketing. Many students were motivated to learn more about these fields after hearing from the speakers, such as Nielsen SVP of Global Communications & Multicultural Marketing Andrew McCaskill and Charter Communications VP of Multicultural Marketing Marisol Martinez. Technology breakouts covered artificial intelligence development, newsgathering technology, digital video content and technology, and “over-the-top.
Spotlight Speaker Hoda Kotb, co-anchor of the TODAY show on NBC and the co-host of the fourth hour of NBC’s TODAY, inspired our students with her discussion of the challenges and opportunities that she has had along her career path. Her speech left a lasting mark on the fellows.
Alumni play an important role in our annual conference. From spreading the word about EBF to participating in table talks and panels, alumni continue to pay it forward by sharing their advice and experiences.
Special programming for rising seniors focused on early preparation for their job search. Rising seniors took part in a mentorship dinner and a hiring program, which starts off a year of individualized coaching. We can’t wait to see what they do next!
Rising and graduating seniors were able to meet with more than twenty partner companies to find out about available employment options in the industry.
Our Power Networking Reception brings together EBF students, Alumni and Media Professionals (AMP) network members, and partner company representatives. Raffle prizes were provided by our partner companies.
