Equity Reporter

EdSource is looking to expand its coverage of equity in the state with the nation’s largest public education systems. The nonprofit newsroom seeks a reporter to join its award-winning education team in a newly defined beat that straddles high school and the post-graduation pursuits of students, including higher education and other pathways to careers, such as technical education. 

While all of EdSource’s coverage is equity-driven, this role will help steer the newsroom’s storytelling in this area on issues like closing the achievement gaps among racial, ethnic and other underrepresented groups. We’re looking for someone who knows how to go beyond the daily news cycle and develop in-depth journalism that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the complex issues surrounding race and ethnicity while searching for solutions to some of the most vexing issues facing education in California and beyond. 

EdSource sets the stage for education coverage in California, with the state’s largest team of education reporters. The successful candidate will be passionate and resourceful, with a deep understanding of how to write with impact, as well as to place regional education challenges within a state and national context. The Equity Reporter will know how to juggle longform pieces, short news updates, as well as analytical enterprise. If you’re right for this role, you will have a knack for distilling complex topics and education jargon into clear, engaging storytelling that sheds new light on issues and trends in education. 

Founded in 1977, EdSource has earned its reputation as a highly respected and independent nonprofit newsroom with a long track record of reporting on important education issues. While its primary focus in on California, EdSource covers issues within a national context. Our journalism is published online, in daily email newsletters, via video and podcast, as well as through partnerships with other news organizations.

This position can be based in the Bay Area or Southern California, although the organization is currently working remotely.

Qualifications:

• At least 5 years of daily journalism experience;
• Ability to work independently under deadline;
• Experience in education journalism a plus but not required;
• Ability to work with spreadsheets to analyze data a plus;
• Audio or video reporting skills a plus.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Write impactful and insightful stories, including enterprise and short-form news;

• Maintain an active online presence, as well as develop new ways to build an audience;
• Work with data journalist and data visualization specialist to examine equity data;
• Other duties as assigned.
