Digital Content Producer Part-Time - WQAD

Are you a “news junkie” with a passion for journalism and content creation? If so, WQAD News 8 has an immediate opening for a Digital Content Producer Part-Time.

As a key member of our online news team you will be contributing a variety of content to WQAD.com, associated digital platforms and social media. The ideal candidate will be outgoing, have natural curiosity, a passion for news, and the ability to tell a complete and understandable story using a variety of storytelling tools.

Principal Responsibilities:
Mine a wide variety of sources for relevant content. Select, research, write and produce original articles, videos and other viral content.

Work independently and use solid judgement for content selection and priorities.

Work under frequently tight deadlines and have the ability to react to breaking news situations quickly and accurately.

Capture and edit images and video using Final Cut 10.

Develop sources and review contributions from others for publication.

Assist in reviewing digital analytics and metrics to help adjust our digital strategy as needed.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will be working toward a Bachelor’s Degree in mass communications, journalism or a related field, strong writing skills, strong organizational skills, and a high level of creativity.

The right candidate for this position will be available to work a variety of hours including overnights and weekends.

Must have a working knowledge of editing on Final Cut Pro

Meteorologist - WQAD

Do you have a passion for weather and storm chasing? Our StormTrack 8 weather crew is looking for a dependable and enthusiastic meteorologist to join our team. You would be forecasting on the weekends with chances to chase during the week in the weather vehicle we call “The Beast”. When weather is slow, you’d help our news team out by turning weather-related news content.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Anchor weather segments on scheduled newscasts

Compile forecasts and other weather data using WSI systems and other related sources

Ability to track storms safely from a chase vehicle

Shoot/Edit video for weather related news content

Mine a wide variety of sources for relevant weather content that would air in our newscasts

Write weather related content for all digital platforms

Maintain social media accounts

Represent WQAD during public appearances

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS: Strong forecasting and adlibbing skills are required. Must be able to handle stress, including short deadlines. Meteorology and Journalism background, excellent English communication skills and a basic understanding of AP style are required. Computer skills are required. Experience with Photoshop and digital video editing are helpful. Must be self-motivated and able to work with a diverse group of people.

OVERALL SUMMARY:
Associate Producer will be responsible for all phases of sports-oriented, investigative news magazine show. She/he will report to Segment Producer.

 
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Pitch and develop stories. 
• Research stories. 
• Assist in all phases of field shooting.
• Supervise field shoots  
• Oversee logistics planning for shoots, travel, etc. 
• Produce accurate and useful media logs. 
• Organize tapes, research, edits and travel logistics.

Computer skills are required. . Must be self-motivated and able to work with a diverse group of people.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Dexterity to operate a keyboard, computer and other such equipment. Communication skills used in office setting.

CALmatters Summer Video Intern

CALmatters is looking for a summer video intern. If you are a critical thinker, open to learning new things and want to help create quality video news content, please apply for our paid internship.

Our video intern will help us organize our media database and spruce up our YouTube channel via captions, engaging thumbnail images and search engine optimization. In addition, the intern will work with our video journalist to help produce quality, engaging video content for our growing online audience. We are a small shop. What will I do:
You will assist with shooting, researching, and logging video footage, examine CALmatters’ previous stories, embed relevant CALmatters’ video content, and help us assess and update our YouTube channel. Be prepared to learn from a team of experienced journalist.

When is it, where is it, and do I have to be a student?
Ideally, the internship would begin roughly in late May and run through mid-August. However, we are flexible on exact dates. Ideally, applicants will be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate coursework, but recently graduated applicants are encouraged to apply. We prefer that the intern works out of our Sacramento office.

What I need to see on your resume:

  • Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (Premiere Pro) preferred

What will I do?  You’ll contribute to several major data projects we have planned this summer, on issues ranging from climate change impact to the educational achievement gap. Interns’ work will depend on their skill set and interests, but interns will likely be asked to help with data collection and analysis, public records requests, statistical analysis, database construction and querying, programming, and creating some snazzy visualizations and interactives.

You’ll also have the opportunity to learn from a team of experienced journalists who are happy to teach. 

What skills are you looking for? The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated interest in utilizing data to explain complex policy and politics topics in an easily digestible way. Journalism students are encouraged to apply, as are students from other fields (graphic design, computer science, public policy, statistics). In your cover letter and resume please describe:

  • A list or description of what data analysis tools you’ve used and what programming languages you may know.
  • A list or description of what visualization tools you may be proficient with.
  • One or two data-intensive projects you’ve worked on and how you created them. Projects do not have to be journalistic.
  • Audio and video skills a plus!
