Full-time Web Content Producer (News department)

Reports to:  Digital Content Manager                                                   

POSITION SUMMARY (Scope & Purpose)

Our news department is looking for a talented and creative journalist to join our growing online news team producing content for WQAD.com and our social media channels.  We’re looking for someone with a passion for news, and the ability to tell a complete and understandable story.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Mine a wide variety of sources for relevant content.   Select, research and write original stories and viral content.

Capture, edit and post images and video.

Represent WQAD professionally on social media. 

Develop sources and review contributions from others for publication.

Identify content opportunities that complement our on-air news.   

Work independently and demonstrate solid judgment for content selection and priorities.

Work under frequently tight deadlines, and have the ability to react to breaking news situations quickly and accurately.

Other duties as assigned. 

 

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:  Strong writing skill is required.   Must be able to handle stress, including short deadlines.  Journalism background, excellent English communication skills and a basic understanding of AP style are required.  Computer skills are required.  Experience with Photoshop and digital video editing are helpful.   Must be self-motivated and able to work with a diverse group of people. 

A positive, “can-do” approach is required, complainers without solutions will probably be sent to our competition! 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Dexterity to operate a keyboard, computer and other such equipment.  Communication skills used in office setting.

RELATIONSHIPS:  This position works with staff in news, operations, sales, marketing, engineering and creative services departments as well as with the corporate interactive team and with the general public.
