This CPR News senior reporter will dig for trends, data, personal stories and accountability journalism that will help tell the stories of a diversity of Colorado’s communities. The reporter will search for historical and present day inequities in a variety of topics, including economics, environment, health care, policing, courts, education and quality of life. Looking for solutions-based angles when possible, this reporter will find stories in Denver, along the Front Range and throughout Colorado. The reporter will collaborate with reporters on other beats to expand our reporting into all topics.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Covers the topics and trends that shape Colorado, looking for stories around diversity, equity or inequity, social justice and inclusion, holding public officials and institutions accountable.
- Routinely uses data and open records to discover stories, track progress and identify trends. Collaborates with the digital desk and data reporter to coordinate ways to use data/graphics to tell these stories online. Pursues investigative work in the beat to uncover distinctive stories.
- Establishes a broad range of sources and contacts to provide for coverage of state and local issues while also addressing how national policies play out in the state. The reporter will create a statewide presence for the beat.
- Looks for solutions-based stories where they exist.
- Files a range of breaking, developing and enterprise stories.
- Researches, writes, reports, edits and voices stories for radio newsmagazines, CPR’s online news sites, and periodically for Colorado Matters.
- Participates in all assigned fundraising and outreach activities.

Education and Experience Requirements:
- Professional experience (7+ years) in journalism or related field highly desired.
- Experience and major responsibility for a beat, in-depth enterprise or investigations in a specific field/topic highly desired, on top of breaking news experience.
- Demonstrated understanding of the fundamentals of journalism and fair and accurate reporting.
- Demonstrated ability to source and find stories in various different communities, and to balance daily news needs with longer-term enterprise work.
- Must understand and adhere to CPR News Ethics policy.
- Social media skills and data analysis skills are desirable.
- Radio production skills or desire and ability to learn required.
- Familiarity with WordPress or ability to learn required.
- Able to work collaboratively, supporting colleagues from various different perspectives and experiences, and able to meet deadlines and juggle multiple tasks.
- Ability to lift and carry recording equipment (up to 10 pounds).
- A current driver’s license and/or access to reliable transportation.
Available to work during non-standard working hours and weekend on-call shifts, as needed. This job will include travel.
Position begins Oct. 1, 2021 and is based in CPR’s downtown Denver newsroom.
